The U.S. Senate voted on a bill aimed at reopening the federal government and ending the 40-day shutdown, which had disrupted the work of federal employees, delayed food assistance, and hampered air travel.

In a procedural vote, the Senate members approved a bill that had already passed the House of Representatives and will be amended to fund the government until January 30, including three annual appropriations packages. If the Senate passes the amended version, it must then be approved by the House before being sent to President Donald Trump for his signature—a process that could take several days.

Under an agreement reached with a group of Democrats, Republicans agreed to hold a vote in December on extending subsidies provided under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”).
